DeLauro Statement on Trump Refusing to Label China a Currency Manipulator
WASHINGTON, DC (April 13, 2017) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding President Trump refusing to label China a currency manipulator.
“I am shocked that President Trump so cynically walked away from his commitment to label China a currency manipulator. He promised to do it on day one, and we haven’t even made it through his first 100 days. On trade policy, like on health care, he has betrayed working men and women who continue to lose their livelihoods under this Administration.
“While there may not be active intervention to depreciate the value of China’s currency today, their currency cheating has contributed to the persistent and enormous trade deficit. China’s past currency manipulation has cost Americans 5 million jobs, and the economy for working class men and women has still not recovered from it. That is why I have called upon the Administration to create a new paradigm for trade with China that prioritizes working men and women and puts in place strong, enforceable measures to safeguard working Americans from currency manipulation.”
