DeLauro Statement on Trump’s 2018 Budget Proposal
WASHINGTON, DC (February 27, 2017) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding President Trump's 2018 budget. DeLauro is the Senior Democrat on the Appropriations subcommittee responsible for funding the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, which represent 31 percent of non-defense spending and will be decimated by the President's proposed cuts.
"President Trump campaigned on the pledge that he would fight for working men and women, yet his 2018 budget does nothing to build on his promises. Budgets reflect our values, and the President has made it clear that he values Wall Street, corporations, and the wealthy over America's working families and the middle class. Blindly cutting $54 billion from non-defense programs would decimate the EPA and weaken the programs that serve millions of America's most vulnerable. The President's budget is not realistic and will be a disaster for the American people.
"Rather than build on the progress we have made, President Trump is determined to make achieving the American Dream more difficult for families. While the President claims to want to give the American people greater opportunity, the reality is that his policies chart a different path. President Trump should take a hard look at the ways in which his cuts will hurt the American people and should instead choose to prioritize critical investments like infrastructure, the National Institutes of Health, child care, and early childhood education."
