DeLauro Statement on Trump’s Cuts to the 2017 Budget

March 28, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC (March 28, 2017) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding President Trump's proposal to cut funding in the 2017 budget. DeLauro is the Senior Democrat on the Appropriations subcommittee responsible for funding the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies.

"President Trump's proposal to cut funding for many programs in the 2017 budget and redirect funding to build his border wall is shameful. While he campaigned on building the wall, President Trump also pledged to work for the ‘forgotten men and women of our country.' The very programs President Trump is now proposing to cut help countless Americans, including many of the ones he claims are forgotten, and cutting them does nothing to ‘make America great again.'

"These programs are more than just numbers on a sheet of paper—they have a very real impact on the lives of many Americans. President Trump, before you further propose slashing funding on our labor, health, and education programs, I ask you to come and see firsthand how these programs work for the American people. You cannot continue to make reckless, irresponsible cuts without understanding the programs you are proposing to cut or eliminate. Enough is enough."
