DeLauro Statement on Trump’s Executive Order on Steel
WASHINGTON, DC (April 20, 2017) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding President Trump’s executive order to investigate steel’s importance to America’s national security interests.
“While today’s executive order to investigate potential national security vulnerabilities due to steel imports is a step forward, I will hold the Administration accountable on its promises to fight for working Americans. Already, President Trump has backed off on his promise to only use American steel for the Keystone XL pipeline, and he has walked back his commitment to hold China accountable for its decades of strategic currency misalignment.
“Our workers have been crushed by the Chinese steel overcapacity dumped into American markets and millions of good paying jobs have been lost. China is not a market economy, and we cannot continue to leave our workers exposed to non-market competition by the Chinese Communist Party.
“The hundreds of thousands of workers and communities in America who depend upon the steel industry deserve real enforcement of our laws to hold bad actors accountable. That is why I will continue to press the Administration to enforce the rules for fair trade and to live up to its promises to working people. A new investigation is a start, but the proof is in the enforcement.”
