DeLauro Statement on Trump Withdrawal from Iran Nuclear Agreement

May 8, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC (May 8, 2018) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement following President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

"I am extremely disappointed by President Trump's decision to unilaterally undermine our nation's nuclear agreement with Iran, which has peacefully prevented that country from developing nuclear weapons. This action imperils our security by making future accords toward peace all the more difficult to secure—not just with Iran, but also with North Korea. The JCPOA successfully reduced Iranian uranium by 95 percent, and because of it, Iran dismantled roughly two thirds of its centrifuges. That is real progress towards peaceful denuclearization, all potentially undone by one misguided campaign promise."

"From former Israeli Generals and Commanders to the international community and foreign leaders, there was broad support that the Iran nuclear agreement was working to prevent Iranian development of the bomb. President Trump has recklessly gambled with our national security by deciding to withdraw despite verified evidence that Iran has been in compliance. His reckless action risks yet another nuclear crisis, and only pushes the United States and Iran further down the dangerous path of militarization."
