DeLauro Statement on U.S. and Cuba Embassy Announcement

July 1, 2015

NEW HAVEN, CT--Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today on President Obama’s announcement the United States and Cuba have reached an agreement to open embassies in their respective capitals.

“I strongly support this move by the Obama Administration. We have been working to normalize diplomatic relations between the two countries for many years, and this is a major achievement that will allow us to make continued progress on critical challenges between our countries and eventually open economic relations.

“The world is a very different place than it was over 50 years ago when we broke off diplomatic relations and the time is long past for us to move beyond failed policies that do nothing to further America’s interests in the region.

“Today’s actions are a positive step forward, but the Administration cannot move alone. Congress must remove the trade embargo to better represent the interests of both American and Cuban citizens”

DeLauro has made multiple trips to Cuba and is a longtime proponent of ending the current trade embargo. She is also a member of the Cuban Working Group.
