DeLauro Statement on USDA SNAP Announcement
WASHINGTON, DC (January 8, 2019) – Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) announcement on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for the month of February.
“Tonight’s announcement from the USDA is nothing more than another haphazard, politically-motivated attempt to continue President Trump’s ill-conceived shutdown. This proposal shifts responsibility from the Trump Administration to State SNAP agencies, who must now rush to get benefits out by January 20. It also fails to address the shortfalls in other nutrition programs, including food distribution programs for Native communities. This is just more proof that the President does not understand and is not concerned by the impact his shutdown is having on working families and the most vulnerable in our country. President Trump needs to finally take responsibility and reopen the government instead of moving chaotically from manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis.”
DeLauro is a senior Democrat on the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, which is responsible for funding the USDA.
