DeLauro Statement on the White House’s Diaper Initiative

March 10, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC (March 10, 2016) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding the White House’s new initiatives on diaper access. Last year, DeLauro introduced the Hygiene Assistance for Families of Infants and Toddlers Act, which would help states provide diapers to low-income and working families.

“I commend the Obama Administration for making diaper access a focus of the President’s trip to SXSW and for exploring ways to work with the private sector to address this issue. Diaper access has been at the forefront of my fight in helping working families and we must work together to find solutions to this critical issue. Working families in America often make impossible choices between food, clothing, and housing, which only become more difficult when the cost of diapers is added.

“At a time when so many families are still struggling to get ahead, Congress should immediately pass the Hygiene Assistance for Families of Infants and Toddlers Act, which would help states provide diapers to low-income and working families. Diapers continue to be a huge financial burden on American families, and asking for companies to voluntarily collaborate is not enough. We need to provide states with tools to respond to this issue and help families across the country ensure that their children grow up healthy and strong.”
