EPI Report Shows Deficit with TPP Nations Cost 2 Million Jobs in 2015
WASHINGTON, DC (March 3, 2016) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement on a report by the Economic Policy Institute detailing the 2015 U.S. trade deficit and jobs lost due to trade with countries involved in the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
"The new report by EPI highlights the extreme job losses that the United States has endured in trade with countries involved in the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Just last year, the trade deficit with TPP nations cost the U.S. more than 2 million jobs, with losses coming from every one of the 50 states. From manufacturing and health care, to finance and insurance, the job losses impacted sectors across the American workforce.
"Under the Trans-Pacific Partnership, these job losses will only escalate, as will our trade deficit. With no enforceable rules to deal with currency manipulation, countries like Japan, Malaysia, and Vietnam will continue to drain our jobs, suppress our wages, and hurt the American middle class."
