DeLauro Statement on FDA Ban on JUUL Products
Chair of the House Appropriations Committee Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) issued the following statement following an announcement that the Food and Drug Administration banned JUUL products from the U.S. market. The ban issued by the FDA subjects any JUUL product offered for sale or distributed in the United States to FDA enforcement action.
"Today's action by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ensures that all e-cigarette products marketed to consumers meets our public health standards. The FDA found that JUUL could not sufficiently demonstrate that concerns regarding the potentially harmful chemicals leaching from the company's e-liquid pods had been adequately addressed.
"To date, the company has still not provided FDA with the necessary data to alleviate concerns that JUUL products meet the standards set by U.S. law on tobacco products. I applaud the FDA for prioritizing public health and banning JUUL products from the market."
DeLauro first introduced the Preventing Online Sale of E-Cigarettes Act in 2015. The legislation would require in-person age verification upon delivery of online purchases of e-cigarette and vaping products.
In October 2019, DeLauro held a hearing in the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee on the emerging public health threat of e-cigarettes.
In December 2019, DeLauro hosted a Member Forum with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NAASP) to hear from those who are facing the youth vaping epidemic directly: students and principals.
In December 2020, she secured the historic inclusion of her legislation, the Preventing Online Sales of E-Cigarettes Act, in the fiscal year 2021 appropriations spending bill.
There are many resources available to help smokers who want to quit. Quitting all tobacco products is the best possible path to good health.
Some current JUUL users who will not have access to JUUL products following this action or current smokers who want to transition away from cigarettes and cigars may decide to switch to other ENDS products that have been reviewed and authorized by the FDA based on their potential to benefit adult smokers.
