DeLauro Statement on Food and Drug Administration Restructuring of Human Foods Program

January 31, 2023

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released a statement in response to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) announced restructuring of its human food program.

“I have not been quiet in my belief that food is currently a second class-citizen at the FDA. I have demanded the agency and its leaders step up and get serious about remedying the egregious structural issues that have plagued the agency for far too long.

“While questions remain about how FDA will implement these reforms, I am pleased with today’s announcement as it moves the agency in the right direction. As the agency reimagines the Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA), I will be closely monitoring the integration of ORA Human Foods field operations with the work of the new Deputy Commissioner to ensure a truly unified Human Foods Program at FDA. I will also closely monitor future developments, including the launch of the national competitive search and who is assigned to crucial roles, as this will be a critical tool in determining who will lead and serve as the agency begins its restructuring and addressing cultural changes. I will be in close contact with the agency and its leadership about further details of its plans and how lawmakers can be helpful in supporting their proposed reforms.

“Let me be clear: I want to be a strong partner to FDA. If they can successfully restructure the human foods program, it will benefit the health and wellbeing of the American people. I stand ready to work with FDA and the Biden Administration to improve food safety and ensure the agency has the necessary resources to succeed.”
