Recommends considering alternative structures for oversight of food safety

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) issued the following statement on a new report released by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), which continues to include federal oversight of food safety as "high risk" to the economy and public health and safety. The GAO has conducted the high risk series since 1990.

Senate takes important 1st step to restore fair pay laws, help close wage gap

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn. -3) praised the bipartisan Senate passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (S. 181) as an important first step in the effort to begin to close the wage gap between men and women. The legislation restores the law as it was prior to the Supreme Court's decision by clarifying that each paycheck resulting from a discriminatory pay decision would constitute a new violation of employment nondiscrimination law.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) announced that the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board in Waterbury will receive a $200,000 federal grant through the Environmental Protection Agency to teach environmental job skills to individuals near brownfield sites. Nationwide, more than 4,000 people have completed training programs, with more than 3,000 obtaining employment in the environmental fields, earning an average wage of $13.84 per hour.

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn. -3) issued the following statement on the report issued by the Government Accountability Office: "FDA Should Take Steps to Ensure that High Risk Device Types are Approved Through the Most Stringent Premarket Review Process," which found that the agency approved higher-risk medical devices using a process intended for low-risk products.

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn. -3) praised the State Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization bill (H.R. 2), which would reauthorize the popular program for the next four and a half years, through 2013. The bipartisan bill would provide health coverage for 11 million children – preserving coverage for the 7 million children currently covered by the State Children's Health Insurance Program and extending coverage to 4 million uninsured children who are currently eligible for, but not enrolled in, SCHIP and Medicaid.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) issued the following statement following news from the Labor Department that in December the economy shed another 524,000 jobs. Additionally, the job-loss figures for November were revised upward – to 584,000 from the earlier number of 533,000. This brings the number of jobs lost for all of 2008 to 2.6 million. Further the unemployment rate increased a half a percentage pointing jumping to 7.2 percent from 6.7 percent in November.

Legislation will restore fair pay laws, help close wage gap

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn. -3) applauded passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (H.R. 11), which will restore the law as it was prior to the Supreme Court's decision. It clarifies that each paycheck resulting from a discriminatory pay decision would constitute a new violation of employment nondiscrimination law. As long as a worker files a charge within 180 days of a discriminatory paycheck, the charge would be considered timely.

Pay equity is about economic security for women & their families

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives, passed the Paycheck Fairness Act (H.R. 12), introduced by Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3). The legislation aims to close the wage gap between men and women by strengthening and giving teeth to the Equal Pay Act and closing loopholes that have allowed employers to avoid responsibility for discriminatory pay. The bill was approved overwhelmingly by a vote of 256-163.
