Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) praised the passage today of the FY2011 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which will make significant investments in all aspects of our nation's military. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives today by a vote of 229 to 186.

Burgess, M.D. (TX-26) introduced the Birth Defects Prevention, Risk Reduction, and Awareness Act of 2010 today, which will help provide accurate, evidence-based information to pregnant and breast-feeding women about medications, chemical exposures, foodborne illness and other exposures associated with birth defects or health risks to a breastfed infant.

Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) commended Wellpoint, Inc. for its announcement that starting July 1, 2010, it will guarantee a minimum 48-hour hospital stay as a standard clinical benefit to all patients with breast cancer who have mastectomies.
With an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women expected this year, this guarantee will enable women, along with their physicians, to determine the appropriate length of hospital stay for them.
Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) sent letters to Wellpoint, Inc. America's Health Insurance Plans, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, and other national health insurance companies today, urging them to guarantee 48-hour hospital stays to patients with breast cancer who have mastectomies, if they do not already have such a policy in place. Currently, 20 states have such laws that prevent women being forced to leave the hospital sometimes only hours after surgery, a practice known as a ‘drive thru mastectomy.'
