Today, Representatives Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) and Joe Courtney (CT-02) and announced that a bipartisan bill they led along with Representative Lee Zeldin (R-NY) to prohibit the sale of Plum Island passed unanimously in the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill prohibits the General Services Administration (GSA) from using any of its operational funding to process or complete a sale of Plum Island until after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) completes a study of alternative disposition options for the island. A similar measure passed last year, but did not make it through the Senate.

“The vote in the Senate to proceed today was shameful. While we don’t know what bill the Senate Republicans will proceed to, we know that the Republican proposals to repeal and replace the ACA would unravel protections for patients with preexisting conditions, eliminate coverage for essential health benefits such as prescription drug coverage, hospitalization, and preventative care, and make healthcare unaffordable by raising premiums and deductibles. A repeal without a replacement would also mean 32 million people without insurance.”

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) joined Curt Johnson, Executive Director of Save the Sound, and Commissioner Rob Klee, from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to announce the successful inclusion of $8 million for the Long Island Sound in the FY 2018 Department of Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. Though the President’s FY18 budget request zeroed out all geographical programs, including the Long Island Sound program, DeLauro was able to secure the funding through the House budget process.

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) visited the Greater New Haven Building Trades to discuss the importance of the US Department of Labor’s Apprenticeship Program and the impact of the House Republican plan to eliminate the program.

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) introduced the Safe Chicken and Meat for Children Act of 2017. This bipartisan bill ensures that Chinese produced or processed meat and chicken is banned from the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), School Breakfast Program (SBP), Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

"Programs that help grow our economy, educate our students, and protect women and seniors cannot operate if the Labor-HHS bill is starved of funding."

The budget released today by House Republicans is another stark reminder that Republicans and President Trump are waging a war on the middle class, while eviscerating the social safety net for the most vulnerable that keeps so many out of poverty. They threaten the work of so many Democratic and Republican leaders who built our safety net.
