Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro today applauded the House Judiciary Committee for their vote to send the Protecting Our Kids Act package of gun legislation to the House floor. The full package, which contains safe storage legislation authored by DeLauro, will be voted on the floor of the House of Representatives next week.

"When Abbott announced their voluntary recall of infant formula in February, I immediately wrote to the HHS Office of Inspect General requesting an investigation into whether the Food and Drug administration took prompt and appropriate action in response to the recall. Given subsequent revelations, it is clear that the FDA dropped the ball – dragging their feet to responding to damning allegations of substandard practices and fraud delivered by a credible whistleblower.

"Predatory, for-profit colleges account for nearly one third of defaults. These institutions mislead students, pressure them into taking out costly loans, overpromise on their future earnings, and scam taxpayers and working families out of millions of dollars. We have a duty to hold these perpetrators accountable. I applaud the Biden administration and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona for cancelling all remaining loans for borrowers defrauded by Corinthian Colleges.

"Let me be clear from the start: we are not going to get to the bottom of what went wrong if everyone involved wants to skirt accountability. The FDA dragged its feet in responding to a whistleblower report alleging food safety issues at the Abbott Nutrition plant in Sturgis, MI, and now, they're blaming ‘COVID-19 mailroom issues' as the reason that senior FDA officials and then-Acting Commissioner Janet Woodcock did not swiftly respond to these claims. This excuse is convenient, but not compelling enough.

"Fourteen children and one teacher. There are no words to describe our collective grief over this unnecessary loss of life.

"My heart aches for the students, teachers, school staff, and Uvalde community. Today's school shooting in Uvalde, Texas is yet another senseless attack that is the direct result of a repeated lack of action to get guns off our streets.
