Roaches, Not Salmonella Outbreaks Shut Down Plant

WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswomen Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY) released the following comment today on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s decision to order Foster Farms to suspend operations at their Livingston, CA plant. Despite being linked to hundreds of illnesses caused by a drug-resistant strain of Salmonella Heidelberg, it was a roach infestation that has finally provoked USDA to act.

NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) and West Haven Mayor Edward M. O’Brien announced today that the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Emergency Watershed Protection Program has awarded a $2.6 million grant to protect homes in the Old Field Creek salt marsh area. The grant was made available as part of efforts to protect and maintain flood plains in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, and to reduce future risk. NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) joined Stratford Mayor John Harkins, and Ted Lane and Jeff Loureiro of Point Stratford Renewal to unveil the strategy for revitalizing the Stratford Army Engine Plant site. The sale of the site from the Army to Point Stratford Renewal was announced last October 30.

Longest Serving New Haven Alderwoman Centennial Celebration

NEW HAVEN, CT - Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) today honored her mother, Luisa DeLauro, as she celebrated her 100th birthday. Born December 24, 1913, Luisa was the third child born to Cesare and Luisa Canestri. She grew up in the heart of New Haven’s Italian American community and spent most of her childhood in her mother’s pastry shop, Canestri’s. Raised in New Haven’s Wooster Square, she dedicated a lifetime to the neighborhood she called home and the people who lived there.

Approximately 90,000 Connecticut Workers Earn the Minimum Wage

NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) today joined with low-wage workers and Bill Villano, Executive Director of CT Workforce Alliance, to call for increasing the federal minimum wage. Approximately 90,000 Connecticut workers earn the minimum wage, currently $8.70 an hour in Connecticut. The federal minimum wage is currently $7.25 an hour and has not been increased in four years.

NEW HAVEN, CT— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) today urged communities across Connecticut to support holiday toy drive in their cities and towns. Today she made a donation to the Milford Fire Department’s annual holiday toy drive and toured one of their drop-off locations. DeLauro was joined by Lieutenant Jason Hall, one of the toy drive’s co-chairs.
