DeLauro (Conn. -3) announced over $2.2 million for medical research projects at universities in Connecticut, including Yale, Fairfield University, Connecticut College, and the University of Connecticut through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for medical research. The National Institute of Health directs funding to projects that focus on basic research to improve the quality of life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.

DeLauro (D-CT) announced a five year $4.5 million federal grant for the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven to continue its work addressing racial and ethnic disparities in health care. New Haven Healthy Start, which received its first federal grant in 1997 and is now in its fourth round of federal funding from the Department of Health and Human Services, has focused on providing a continuum of improvements to a fragmented maternal and child healthcare system to reduce the infant mortality and morbidity rate in the City.

DeLauro (D-CT) announced that as a result of $200 million included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the National Health Services Corps is able to accept additional applications for its scholarship and loan repayment program, which provides loan repayments of up to $50,000 for clinicians who work in health centers, rural health clinics, and other health care facilities that care for the uninsured and underserved people.

DeLauro has championed similar legislation at the federal level, the Menu Education and Labeling (MEAL) Act , to require chain restaurants with 20 or more business locations to provide consumers with information on calories, sodium, saturated and trans fat, and carbohydrates.
