New Haven, CT – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) recognized Celestino Cordova for his service to the nation during the Korean War, presenting him with four medals and two badges, all long overdue: the Korean Service Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Korean Service Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Sharp Shooter Badge and Rifle Bar. Celestino served two tours of duty in Korea and seven years and nine months on active duty.
Washington, DC –Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement today in response to a report in the New York Times today that Wal-Mart, the defendant in the largest gender discrimination lawsuit in history, was aware of such inequities as far back as 1995.
The report, which was conducted more than six years before the first claims were filed, was done to evaluate how vulnerable the company would be to discrimination claims. It found that not only were female employees paid less than their male counterparts, but they were also less likely to be promoted.

DeLauro (CT-3) announced today that the Waterbury and West Haven Housing Authorities have been awarded HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) vouchers. The Waterbury Housing Authority will receive $188,526, and the West Haven Housing Authority will receive $196,470, part of $58,627,081 in housing support for homeless veterans being awarded nationwide.

Burgess, M.D. (TX-26) introduced the Birth Defects Prevention, Risk Reduction, and Awareness Act of 2010 today, which will help provide accurate, evidence-based information to pregnant and breast-feeding women about medications, chemical exposures, foodborne illness and other exposures associated with birth defects or health risks to a breastfed infant.

DeLauro (CT-3) lauded the passage of an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which will require the Department of Defense to conduct an assessment of any unfair competitive advantage and take into consideration those unfair advantages when awarding contracts for major defense acquisition programs.
Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) commended Wellpoint, Inc. for its announcement that starting July 1, 2010, it will guarantee a minimum 48-hour hospital stay as a standard clinical benefit to all patients with breast cancer who have mastectomies.
With an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women expected this year, this guarantee will enable women, along with their physicians, to determine the appropriate length of hospital stay for them.
Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) sent letters to Wellpoint, Inc. America's Health Insurance Plans, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, and other national health insurance companies today, urging them to guarantee 48-hour hospital stays to patients with breast cancer who have mastectomies, if they do not already have such a policy in place. Currently, 20 states have such laws that prevent women being forced to leave the hospital sometimes only hours after surgery, a practice known as a ‘drive thru mastectomy.'
