$18.8 Million Grant Going to Rail Yard Expansion; Station Improvement

DeLauro (D-CT) today heralded the announcement by the Department of Transportation that $18.8 million in Recovery Act funding has been made available to the state of Connecticut for rail yard and parking expansion and station improvement in New Haven and Branford.
Connecticut Hospitals to Benefit from Recovery Act Funding
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (D-CT) today heralded the announcement by the Department of Health and Human Services that $13.4 million in Recovery Act funding has been made available for loan repayments to nurses who agree to practice in facilities with critical shortages and for schools of nursing to provide loans to students who will become nurse faculty.
Underscores unacceptability of status-quo, reinforces urgent need for health reform
New Haven, CT – Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) reiterated the urgent need for health care reform as a new report showing family health care premiums rose almost 7.4 times faster than earnings for Connecticut's workers between 2000 and 2009 was released by Families USA. Further, the report, "Costly Coverage: Premiums Outpace Paychecks In Connecticut," found that in the 10-year period, family health insurance premiums rose by 95.9 percent, while median earnings rose by only 13.0 percent.

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Eunice Kennedy Shriver early this morning. She was an extraordinary woman who accomplished so much for men and women with intellectual disabilities and others in need. Eunice illuminated the world with her dedication, her bravery and her vision. Her death is a loss to the entire nation and we will miss her deeply. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Kennedy and Shriver families at this difficult time."
New Haven, CT – Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) praised the work of the Agricultural Research Service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which released the findings of a six-year study – part of the Northeast Areawide Tick Control Project – showing that a device called the "4-poster" Deer Treatment Bait Station is highly effective at reducing the number of ticks infected with the Lyme disease bacterium.
East Hartford, CT – U.S. Representatives Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3), Joe Courtney (CT-2) and Chris Murphy (CT-5) joined with the International Association of Machinists to keep good-paying jobs in Connecticut. While the delegation fought to have the Defense Appropriations bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives include funding for Pratt and Whitney to build 15 spare engines for F-22 and C-17 aircraft, Pratt and Whitney has raised the issue of closing their maintenance facilities in Cheshire and East Hartford.
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) expressed her support for stop-gap funding for the "Cash for Clunkers" program by allowing the Administration to transfer up to $2 billion from the Department of Energy's Innovative Technology Loan Guarantee Program, which does not expect to award funding until late next year. The program allows consumers to trade in their old, gas-guzzling vehicles and receive vouchers worth up to $4,500 to help pay for new, more fuel efficient cars and trucks.
Washington, D.C. – With dairy farmers in Connecticut struggling to get by, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3), chairwoman of the Agriculture - Food and Drug Administration Appropriations Subcommittee, applauded the decision by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to increase the amount paid for dairy products through the Dairy Product Price Support Program (DPPSP), which will increase dairy farmers' revenue by approximately $243 million. The increases will be in place from August 2009 through October 2009. DeLauro is also a member of the recently revived Congressional Dairy Caucus.
