Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) delivered the following remarks at the House Appropriations Committee markup of its fiscal year 2021 Homeland Security bill. DeLauro is the Chairwoman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies.

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Chair of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, and U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, sent a letter to Acting Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Education (ED) Sandra Bruce calling for a review of the Department of Education’s execution of the CARES Act, federal coronavirus relief legislation aimed at protecting schools and providing them with the resources necessary to operate during a pandemic.

I was thrilled to hear about the opening of the new federally funded CT Department of Labor (CT DOL) Contact Center earlier today. Since mid-March, the Connecticut Department of Labor has received 708,000 claims for unemployment, which is roughly five years’ worth of claims, and at times there was a backlog of up to six weeks. With this unprecedented volume, and with my own office inundated with inquiries, I was happy to help provide the CTDOL with a total of $11M in federal coronavirus relief funding to help them process claims in a more timely and efficient manner. I look forward to this new service alleviating the anxiety felt by so many CT residents who were struggling to have their claims resolved.
