More Than 250 Connecticut First-Graders Participated in Last Year’s Session

NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) today kicked off her annual youth reading program, Rosa’s Readers, at New Haven’s Worthington Hooker Elementary School. Last year more than 250 Connecticut first graders participated in the program, which requires students to read 20 or more books with their parents, siblings, relatives and teachers, over the next three months. Successful students will receive a special Certificate of Achievement.

Bead Industries, which has been in business for over 100 years, develops and makes products used in everything from electronics to home decoration to boat building.

NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today on news that Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiators agreed to give eight years of monopoly protection to life-saving drugs:

“As negotiations continue in Atlanta, the monopoly for Big Pharma is one of the few outstanding issues to be officially settled. Unfortunately, reports have emerged that United States Trade Representative Froman has agreed to give at least an eight year exclusivity guarantee on life-saving medicines.

Washington – Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) along with Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Reps. Joe Courtney (CT-02), Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Jim Himes (CT-04), and Elizabeth Esty (CT-05) announced over $100,000 in federal funds has been awarded to the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation in Bloomfield, CT to place service dogs with wounded veterans. This award from the U.S. Department of Defense will go towards the training of two German Shepherds to be placed with visually impaired veterans in the next 12 months.

WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) today applauded the announcement that Worthington Hooker School in New Haven was selected by the U.S. Department of Education to receive the distinguished Blue Ribbon Award. Worthington Hooker School is one of 335 schools across the nation to be presented with the award this year. They are one of only four in Connecticut.

WASHINGTON, DC—Representatives Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Alan Grayson (D-FL), Louise Slaughter (D-NY), Brad Sherman (D-CA) and Barbara Lee today asked the State Department Inspector General (IG) for an investigation into Malaysia’s upgrade in the latest Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report. Malaysia was upgraded to the Tier 2 Watch List from Tier 3 in the TIP Report, although the country has failed to make substantive improvements in combating trafficking.
